41 Weeks Pregnant: My Story

This section will compose of the personal journal entries of one woman’s first and second pregnancies, separated by a little more than 2 years. I hope it offers insights to the similarities and differences that the same woman can experience over the course of more than one pregnancy. It has definitely been therapeutic for me to write my feelings and symptoms down during these incredibly transitional time periods of my life!

First Pregnancy

Rocket was born 3 days past his due date, so I didn’t write a 41 week update during my first pregnancy. By 7 days past his due date, he was already in my arms!

Second Pregnancy – Written March 13, 2014

There are so many labor-inducing remedies out there and I’ve tried just about all of them. I keep having to remind myself that the baby will be here when the baby is ready. Being 1 week past my due date is most certainly one of the most patience-testing experiences of my life.

I have never felt so ready for pain!

I get so excited with every twinge, cramp, or bit of pressure I feel, ready for it to progress into hardcore labor. But alas, my Braxton Hicks contractions have remained mild and I’m still here, with a baby cozily situated in my womb instead of my arms.

I’ve been trying to keep busy, as I know it will happen when the time is right. It helps to think of all the things I will MISS about being pregnant.

Obviously, there are things I won’t miss (ready to sleep on my stomach and eat sushi again). But overall, I really do love the experience of pregnancy. Some things about it that I especially enjoy:

  • Embracing the miraculous state of carrying a child that my womanly body was designed to know.
  • Feeling my baby’s body parts pressed up against my abdomen and guessing what’s what!
  • The support and love that complete strangers shower on you when they see your perfectly round belly.
  • Sharing the entire experience, anticipation, and preparation with my family- my husband and my son.

It has been incredible, truly! I am not sure exactly what our future plans hold for us, but I do know that the gift of pregnancy will probably only be experienced a handful of times by me.

Yes, I am ready to hold in my arms this sweet baby I’ve been carrying for all these months. But until then, I’ll do my best to extinguish my own impatience and cherish these last final moments of holding him or her safely and soundly inside my body. I know this is the only time I will be able to offer that type of special shelter and protection to my little one before everything changes after his/her big, grand entrance into this world!

It has definitely been therapeutic for me to write my feelings and symptoms down during these incredibly transitional time periods of my life!

First Pregnancy – Written October 21, 2011

Today is our due date! According to statistics, that pretty much means we’re not having a baby today.

I was hoping the little one would be here by now. I’m 40 weeks pregnant, baby, come out already! But this makes perfect sense. Any child of Scott & mine would have to enter this world fashionably late. Heck, we were late to our own wedding! What do we expect to happen when we mix our genes?

You know what? I want Little Lychee to bake in my oven as long as he/she needs to for a healthy entry into this world. Oh, who am I fooling? Come out, kid! You’ve done plenty of growing and before you get too much bigger, remember that I still have to squeeze you out of my woman parts!

As you can see, I am teeter-tottering back and forth in this exercise of patience. There are good signs of progress, anyhow:

1) My Braxton Hicks contractions are getting more unpleasant. They are like bursts of menstrual cramps that go away soon after they come, but in their time here, I don’t want to move at all. Scott has been guiding me to take these moments to practice my breathing technique.

2) Pelvic pressure is getting heavier. I can feel the baby’s head deeper in my pelvis. It makes my daily labor-preparation exercises quite uncomfortable (especially squats). At our last prenatal appointment, the midwife could feel the baby’s head with her finger by doing an internal exam! How cool is that?

3) My bloody show has come. Back on the 18th, I noticed a bit of stringy mucous discharge tinged with blood and confirmed with my midwife that this was from the blood vessels in my cervix rupturing in response to the cervix dilating and effacing. This discharge is still going on today. Typically, full-blown labor follows a few days after the bloody show symptom presents. Of course, that rule is not set in stone and it could still be weeks.

So who knows what all this means.

I might go into labor tonight.

I might go into labor next week.

Or I might be pregnant FOREVER (pleeeeease, Noooo!!).

With all these pre-labor symptoms, this last week has certainly not been a walk in the park… despite how much literal walking in the park we’ve been doing. It helps knowing that the worse I feel, the closer I am.

For now, all I can do is wait patiently and deal with it one practice contraction at a time.

First Pregnancy – Written October 17, 2011

So I have a shocking confession to make.

I have NEVER in my entire life held a human baby!

Neither has Scott.

Even more, I have changed only ONE diaper in my life.

Scott has changed ZERO.

You know what this means? Absolutely nothing to either of us. It’s fascinating how strong maternal & paternal instincts are. I am not in the least bit nervous about handling a newborn baby despite this lack of experience of ours. Maybe I’m being naive? Maybe in a matter of weeks, my posts on this blog will be a desperate plea for help!

But for now, I have no apprehension about being a parent. I know in my heart and soul that it’s a position I was born to fill and I am perfectly confident that we will do one awesome job at it. Every moment of my whole life has been a stepping stone just to lead me to this purpose and I’m ready now to devote my everything to it.

I’m 39 weeks pregnant and the contractions are already getting more uncomfortable.

Any day now, I’m going to go into labor. The material I focus on writing for this blog will take a different spin as a chapter turns and our lives change forever.

Thank you, everyone, for all your support throughout my pregnancy!

I can’t wait to share the exciting news of our baby’s birth with you. <3
